This takes me back to my days working at Time Inc in Los Angeles. We had earthquake preparation plans for how we would operate if an earthquake took out the office and impacted our ability to do business. The worst case scenario was a disruption in communication systems - so we couldn't reach each other. We were early internet then and pre-Apple/Android cell phones. We had a detailed buddy list procedure by people clusters (communities) so people could check in with each other. Thankfully, we never had a serious quake, but we did have a few that had impact on our ability to work at the office.

To add: I did not know this about Waffle House. What a testament to their leadership.

That’s great that Time prepared in advance.

Honestly, one thing I didn’t point out well enough in the article is that the preparations are more important than the plan.

The plan, whatever it is, won’t ever be able to happen as you expect. However, the preparation it takes to put the plan together is the important element that defines communication, decision making and role setting.
