Honesty Isn't Leadership

"I'm just being honest" is not leadership. It's an excuse. There's a 2,000-year-old test for what you should actually say before you say it.

I have two coaching clients right now who both tell me the same thing.

They say, “I don’t really have a filter.”
And neither one is trying to be mean.

Neither one wakes up in the morning thinking, “Hey, I wonder who I can offend today.” In fact, they’re both really good people.

The problem is that when something pops into their head, out it comes.

And when people get upset, they defend themselves using the same sentence they always do: “I’m just being honest.”

I don’t think they’re being honest.
I think they’re confusing honesty with leadership.

Because here’s the thing: just because something is true doesn’t mean it needs to be said.

The Three Questions

That’s a lesson people have been trying to teach for over 2,000 years, and you’re gonna be surprised with who started it.
